International Union of Agricultural Workers:
Health & Safety Capacity building
particularly for Pesticides
WELCOME  from Omara

to
Online Health & Safety Support

We wish to impove the health and safety capacity of IUF affiliates to help reduce risks for our members.

We will do this by using health and safety qualifications developed by UK farmworkers working iwth farmers and the Health & Safety Executive. More.

These help us determine who should do what - managers (4) should manage, supervisors/union reps (3) put policies into practice, and supervised workers(2) follow proper procedures.

These qualification are offered by City & Guilds level 2 & 3

We have use of online learning materials for level 2

We can use online support material to check conditions with the ILO convention standards, as spelt out in the Ethical Base Code, which many retailers work to. eg. Health and Safety

Pesticides in particular

For pesticides we are going to use the different levels in the union organisation to work out who does what for pesticides. National officers are equivalent to level 4 as they manage pesticide reduction policies, while workplace reps correspond to level 3 as they need to help develop proper pesticides practices. Union members working in the fields are supervised workers so would comply with level 2 requirements. See the left hand column for "H&S functions", which helps to determine who should do what.

We will use the standards laid by GlobalGAP, as many companies are signed up to them, and our members can help make sure the standards are being followed.
