Pesticides Learning Programme CHECKLIST FOR H&S REPRESENTATIVES (Level 3) CHEMICAL & PESTICIDE Do you have a list of chemicals and pesticides used by workers both on plantations and farms and in the factories? Do you have Material Safety Data Sheets in a language the workers understand for each chemical/pesticide used? Do all workers working with chemicals or pesticides receive regular medical checkups? Do workers with chemicals/ pesticides receive training in hazards, chemical safety, ppe, spills, waste disposal? Are chemicals kept in sealed containers in a locked storeroom which is in a seperate buuilding? Are all containers labelled with instructions for safe storage, handling and use in a language workers can understad? Does anbody keep records of chemicals used? Are all workers who work with hazardous chemicals over the age of 18? Are workers provided with appropriate personal protective equipment free of charge? Is everyone working with chemicals or pesticides wearing appropriate protection? (eye shields, masks, gloves, footwear, overalls) Are proper disposal procedures always followed? Do you have written procedures for the safe storage, use and disposal of each chemical or pesticide? Can all workers read and understand the labels? Are medical checkups for workers working with hazardous chemicals documented in personnel records? Does each worker’s contract of employment list any possible occupational diseases associated with the job? Can you affirm that the pesticides and agrochemicals are never kept near the storage of food or the areas of preparation? Can you confirm that fertilizers are stored separate from pesticides? Has the company an area assigned, as close as possible to the deposit, for the dilution of the pesticides before their use? Does the company have a system that ensures pesticides are always diluted in the correct proportion before their application? Can you confirm that the company does not allow the mixture of two different pesticides unless the label specifically allows it? If your company uses seeds treated with pesticides, do you make sure that personnel who handles such seeds use suitable protective equipment? Are personal protective equipment examined and maintained periodically especially the masks and the filters? Does the company have separate facilities to store workers’ personal clothes so that they do not come in contact with chemical agents or the pesticides? Is there access to first aid facilities and showers, or running water, for all those that work with chemical agents or pesticides? |
