IUF ROLE
IUF wants to develop its own ability to meet the challenges being posed by global food supply chains, protect its members and gain recognition - and reward, for their new skills. A key element will be to identify the pesticide supply chains, and the challenges and opportunities to reduce pesticide risks.
IUF and Paraquat: IUF Goodbye Paraquat surveyed 40 major food producers and found "that in the palm oil, banana, and tea sectors, Paraquat-free production is not only desirable but also economically viable and thus possible." IUF calls on Syngenta to Stop Paraquat (pdf). More information from Stop Paraquat site
At a recent International Food Policy Seminar, the man from Nestle, in relation to how important supply chains now are, said:"Whatever the game, we will teach you the rules".
IUF Have produced an extensive Training Manual for Pesticide Control
According to IFPRI Conference (Dec 07) on the World Food Situation: "While new prospects have arisen for some farmers, many others have not been able to take advantage of the new income-generating opportunities, since the rigorous safety and quality standards of food processors and food retailers create high barriers to their market entry."
In relation to pesticides, we will brief you on the rules (laws and codes eg those Conventions relating with Pesticides) so that we are in a better position to hit our targets.
This will involve identifying the various roles union officers, representatives and members have in relation to these food supply chains.
