  • Ensure employers are following legal requirements
  • Develop union control systems for pesticides

ISSUES

As global food production lines increase, so too do the demands on them. There are international standards, but increasinglyt retailer pressures. Trade unions can play a part by ensuring safety throughout the system. Improved skills should be rewarded. As Nestle man said "Whatever the rules, we will show you how to play the game". Consumers expect that their produce has been produced in good conditions, particularly regarding pesticide use. Trade unions are well placed to make sure that is the case, and ensure the health of their members.

As an IUF Officer, you can be expected to be aware of the main international standards for handling pesticides - from when they appear to when they are disposed.

In the absence of proper Extension Services, run down round the world, more responsibility is put on the supply chain to minimise risk. This must mean building capacity and skills of our representatives and members. (Level 3 will look at the actual hazards they need to look out for). Is there any way we can get recognition - and reward for these skills. Reducing exposures for our members should lead to less risks for consumers too.

Here, it is not your responsibility to explain the hazards, but to ensure that somebody does.
