Dr Charles Clutterbuck PhD, MSc, BSc, PGCE, FRSA

Dr Charles Clutterbuck dedicates his life to working, researching, and promoting matters of health, safety and the environment. Nearly 30 years ago he was one of the founders of Hazards Bulletin (now "Hazards"), the main H&S journal for employees, while working for the British Society for Social Responsibility in Science.

He has written many articles/papers on various aspects of health and safety including "Death in the Plastics Industry" about how a seemingly harmless chemical making plastics was found to cause cancer in workers, and "Gene Screen" questioning the ethics of using gene screening to weed out employees.

He retired as a Seniour Lecturer from Blackburn College after 20 years as a tutor specialising in health and safety, and then worked as a Senior Environmental Training Advisor at Goundwork Blackburn. He co-wrote the original "Workers Education and the Environment" learning materials for the Intenational Labour Organisation.

He is a member of the UK government's 'Advisory Committee on Pesticides' and the Advisory Group for the Co-op on pesticide reduction. He represents the TUC/TGWU on the Health & Safety Executive "Health in Agriculture" Working Group where he promoted the development of H&S qualifications for people working on farms. He was a Temporary Adviser to World Health Organisation on online materials for Health, Environment & Safety in the workplace, and is now an adviser for Food and Nutrition course programme.

He is an invited member of the UK government's Trade Union Sustainable Development Advisory Committee (TUSDAC). As part of the build up to the World Summit, Charlie was nominated to the RSA "Sustainable Development Award" and came in 5th in a worldwide vote (nomination and full coverage of award winners).

He has three degrees in agricultural science, a BSc (Agricultural Zoology) from Newcastle University, an MSc (Applied Plant Science) and a PhD (on the effects of herbicides on soil fauna) from Wye (now Imperial) College, London University. He has co-written two books about food and pesticides and is now an Honorary Research Fellow in Dept Health Management & Food Policy, City University.
