Health and Safety Level 3 Ag/Hort

Communicate with Staff

2.1 How to communicate with staff and management about health and safety

The law may reqire a safety policy, and good procedures may have been implemented, but unless there is good communication between staff and with management, all the good work may be lost. Communication is particularly important on farms and in horticulture where distances between workers may be greater than elsewhere. Particular difficulties may also now arise due to the increased use of migrant labour which does not have english as a first language

Tasks

1. Identify elements of good communication

Is writing apolicy enough? Or does that need to be communicated to staff - and if so , how? How should procedures be communicated

Relation with written - verbal explored

2. Checking that the communication is effective

How can you assess whether the communication is effective. Just shouting atsomebody does not mean that it is 'effective'

3. How do you improve communication

Having determined what is effective, examine areas where better commuincation could be implemented...may be lone working, migrant workers, young workers...
